So MT/Discovery done fucked us. You can ONLY watch Roadkill through their new Exclusive streaming app or in their insipid website they’ve been pushing for years now.
They claim that you can still watch for free, but trying to register only lets you choose their discounted trial.
Guess I’m not going to watch your fucking shows now. Fuck off assholes. Can’t live off that YT ad money? Tough shit. I will gladly watch ads before or after, but not during, your free shows. But I will NOT sign up for another damn streaming service.
Roadkill is the only show care to see. I do not give a shit about watching old episodes of that stupid show about two testosterone-fuelled gorillas who make fancy mid-life crisis scooters.
This is fucking horseshit. Just put Roadkill back on YT and let us watch it assholes.

I blame YouTube more, they only want vloggers, dumb compilation videos, and a few “content creators” so that way they can control everything.
But for real, did MT not look at what happened to others who tried this? They have a perfect case study in /Drive, and it went terribly for them.

It lets me watch free without registering. Registering is just how you get to the premium benefits, you don’t need to register at all to access the free content. Like with YouTube you don’t get to watch the latest episodes.

Yeah, this is more of a move telling YT to pound sand or stop fucking over content creators. I kind of wish more content creators would follow.
![]() 03/19/2018 at 19:52 |

How does Roadkill not count as a “content creator”!?
I hate everything.. Fuck it all. Where the mother fucking fuck is that fucking asteroid?!

The issue is who is YouTube’s market? The guy who will sit back with a beer and watch a 40 minute video about two guys dicking around with old cars? Or a 9 year old who will watch Minecraft videos all day long?
Plus, the kid doesn’t know about AdBlock yet...

It’s the doubling of the amount of time between free episodes that really pisses me off. That’s such a big “Fuck you” to the fans.

shit man.... my daughter will watch lets plays all day long... and cooking videos... she doesnt even care about the adds (she also has no intention of ever playing the games.... prefers watching them.... fuckin wierdo)
but yeah... this new generation has been trained to just accept adds....
its wierd
(and she thinks im wierd for trying to get rid of adds)

I you want me to get dark, the youngest generation is being taught this for a reason: When you use a product for free, you’re not the consumer, you’re the product. Teaching you not to skip ads is very beneficial to the actual consumer.

I can’t get to any of that without signing in or registering. perhaps because I’m international.
Though from what I understand if you cancel your sub you still get access to the content with ads.

They might not have rolled the new site out to everyone yet. I only saw it for the first time today.

i understand adds are how you keep things free... and i’d be ok with that if adds were still unobtrusive things on the side bar
im not ok with autoplaying video or a minute and a half of commercial before i get to watch my 2 minute music vid
ads are the fucking devil... and they should die
(its a losing fight.... but im sticking to it)

One of you Oppo fuckers mentioned let’s plays about a year ago.
And now I’m hooked. I don’t even own any video game consoles anymore, but there’s a particular let’s player who I follow and watch along with frequently. Gaaaaah

Or, if he doesn’t smoke, I figured you’d offer a Snickers.

I’m closing in on fucking three ads in about five minutes watching on their stupid streaming site.
![]() 03/19/2018 at 20:40 |

Meh. After the initial 8 week wait, we’ll still see a new episode every month. I’m cool with that.
![]() 03/19/2018 at 20:57 |

Oh well. I ain’t paying for that shit. You can’t force people to pay for something that you have been giving out for free unless it is drugs. in either case, you are a bad person.

Seriously, I don’t mind an occasional ad, but it’s literally every 2 minutes. Fuck this.

Man, MT going off YouTube will suck. That’s basically the only time I think to look at a Roadkill/MT/etc. ep: “I’m bored, so let’s see what’s on the Internet.” I don’t have cable, so sorry, the TV route’s out. I gave up MTOD after World Challenge was randomly not on when the series said it’d be on, and I really just don’t think to tune in there otherwise.
Not that it will impact MT’s bottom line too much for now, as YouTube does not pay video creators what they should. It’s the same problem with any other big company: the folks at the top make bank, while the people who actually make the stuff that keep the business running get a pittance in comparison, with little of the success of the company getting passed down to the worker-bees who make it tick. Given the effort it takes to create quality YouTube meat, yes, I’d include good YouTube channels in the workforce that’s not getting a fair share of the success-pie.
Sounds like 2018 in a nutshell: burn it all down, and eat the rich. (But I digress.)
But if no one’s discovering old episiodes of stuff in a car-themed YouTube k-hole, will they be able to grow their viewership? It smells like a catch-22 to me. YouTube sucks and everyone in charge of YouTube should feel bad because it sucks, but it reaches an awful lot of new people that self-sequestering your content online doesn’t.
They might pick up a few channel surfers from airing old shows on cable TV, but cable’s a dying medium. TEN could’ve been a way to prop up new owners Discovery if the digital biz was a lean, mean content-cash-makin’ machine. Fill in some of the losses from folks like me who no longer want to pay $30?+ a month to watch Adventure Man drink his own pee with sweet, sweet digital clicks. But uh, this kinda feels like the opposite of that.
tl;dr—everything is trash and that makes coco sad.

Nobody that makes shows like they do can survive off YouTube ad revenue. Before YouTube fucked everything up it was hard now it is near impossible. Before they changed it they said the entire channel didn’t even make enough ad revenue to produce Roadkill every month.
![]() 03/19/2018 at 21:51 |

Old episodes and new episode previews are going to be staying on the YouTube channel. That should help a bit.
![]() 03/19/2018 at 21:53 |

Don’t worry, the stuff they previously gave out for free is still free although you have a longer wait now. They may actually give out more for free this way, I have no clue since I subscribed forever ago.
![]() 03/19/2018 at 22:13 |
|
So we are left with the internet becoming just like fucking cable TV; you have to pay more than it’s worth to access the content you want, and that is above and beyond the ‘basic’ package you already pay for.
I do not need another goddamn streaming service for one fucking show.
![]() 03/19/2018 at 22:43 |

They could probably charge a dime and make more than Youtube paid them
![]() 03/19/2018 at 22:49 |

5 channels I subscribed to have left youtube in the last few months because they are no longer able to make enough to support the channel. It’s reaching a point where channels without 1 million+ subscribers can’t support themselves without external funding.

The whole TEN/MT-Discovery merger just smells of Daimler-Chrysler to me. Motor Trend is Chrysler.

Yeah. Disco had a good thing with the old Wheeler Dealers with Edd on it. But they fucked that up. And I’d be shocked if there is any real audience interested in those two silver backs arguing over who is the more alfa as they build over-powered mobility scooters for the viagra-set boomer population.

I’ve discovered in life you can’t ask for something and leave absolutely no way for it to be created properly.

Previews may help, but as I understood it, the archive was getting yanked off of there.

Bullshit. They have Dodge and other sponsors. They have merch. They have events. They don’t spend tens of thousands on projects or filming.
And, it’s not their only jobs.
Most YouTubers at thier level of subs and views WITHOUT sponsors and crap do just fine.
![]() 03/20/2018 at 12:11 |
|
Yes they have sponsors just as many other shows do. They also have more than one tv show, they have a full network. Mainstream networks normally rely on companies like DirecTV and Dish and the like to pay a certain price to make them profitable. They won’t exist if they just break even. It doesn’t make sense to hate a company for acting like a company.
![]() 03/20/2018 at 12:36 |
|
Wait, did they say that? I hadn’t seen it, but if so, then I’m not nearly as bothered. (I have MTOD, I like it, I didn’t like what I saw as tons of fans getting crapped on)
![]() 03/20/2018 at 12:47 |
|
I don’t hate them for doing what they did, I just don’t understand how it makes sense for the fans.
Roadkill (literally the only show I care about, though I do watch HRG and Engine Masters) was born out of boredom. And cheapness.
And its pretty much stayed that way. Half the cars they have are junk that’s been sitting around in their own garages for decades, as are a lot of the major parts like engines... a lot of stuff is donated by sponsors....
I just don’t understand why ROADKILL can’t survive on its own YouTube revenue.
![]() 03/20/2018 at 12:52 |
|
Well they didn’t say it, but assuming there will still be a new episode every month, there will be a new episode every month. Just instead of one episode exclusively for subscribers at a time, there will be two.
![]() 03/20/2018 at 12:56 |

I hope you’re right.
![]() 03/20/2018 at 15:15 |

They also had sponsors altough idk how much money they were getting from them.

Just spitballing here, but I’m guessing Markiplier, Jack Septic Eye, or Game Grumps.
![]() 03/20/2018 at 20:37 |

I believe it has been stated they get an average of about $5k for a car per episode, I’m going to guess sometimes it is way more since like you said sometimes it is their own cars. I don’t know the exact break downs but I’m going to guess the production company pays for a large amount of the machine work and such on the engines laying around. Nothing is free for the show in the long run. Also many times a sponsorship means discounted parts not completely free.
Socialblade estimates the entire Motor Trend Youtube channel generates between $54k and $870k. Roadkill may be responsible for a large chunk of that but they are only one of twenty two listed shows on the channel. You normally see between two and four faces regularly on the screen so that leaves an untold amount of people behind the cameras and computers on the production team.
It sucks for the people that find it too hard to go to another website or don’t want to pay for videos sooner. With everything on there the price isn’t bad.
![]() 03/20/2018 at 20:38 |

I think many of the sponsors just helped with parts or discounts really.
